When to Take This Marrakech Desert Tour

The desert tour can be done year-round, but some seasons are better than others. Summer is very hot in the desert, and few tourists choose to visit at that time. In winter, nights are cold, but it’s manageable if you dress warmly. The route also includes mountain passes that may be closed by snow in winter. The best seasons to take the Merzouga desert tour are spring or fall.

How to Book a Merzouga Desert Excursion

From both Marrakech and Fes, you can book different tour options to the desert. When choosing a tour, consider the number of days you have. Shorter tours of 2 days (only from Fes) are available, though they’re quite rushed considering the distance between Merzouga and Fes. The standard tour duration is 3 days, but there are longer options for those wanting to spend more time in the desert.

Another consideration is whether to return to your starting point or travel from Marrakech through the desert and end in Fes (or vice versa). This will depend on your flights and the other places you wish to visit. The most popular tour from Marrakech is a 3-day round-trip to Merzouga and back, but you might also consider ending the tour in Fes.

Our 3-Day Experience from Marrakech to Merzouga Desert

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Aït Ben Haddou – Skoura – Dades Valley

Our driver and guide, Omar, picked us up early from our riad, and we set off in a 4×4. As we crossed the Atlas Mountains, we were in awe of how the scenery and colors changed. We stopped frequently to take photos of the typical Berber villages and the vibrant mountain landscapes. We reached the Tizi N’Tichka pass at 2,260 meters, and after lunch, we arrived at the famous Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been the backdrop for many famous films such as (Game of Thrones, and Gladiator). Although it’s a popular tourist spot, it’s worth exploring.

Later, we traveled through the “Route of a Thousand Kasbahs” and saw the Kasbah Amridil, a stunning 17th-century fortress featured on Morocco’s 50 Dirham note. Passing through the Skoura Palm Grove and the Valley of Roses, we ended our day in the Dades Gorge, staying overnight at Panorama Dades, a simple yet comfortable guesthouse with stunning views.

Day 2: Dades Gorge – Todra Gorge – Merzouga Desert

On day two, we explored Dades Gorge with its impressive rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers.” After crossing into more desolate terrain, we took a detour across an unpaved road and encountered a nomadic Berber with his camels, one of the magical moments of our trip. Later, we arrived at Todra Gorge, where we felt dwarfed by the towering cliffs on each side of the Todra River. Eager to reach Merzouga, we made our way to the desert and met the team from the family-run tour company. Finally, we mounted camels for our journey into the desert, arriving at the camp just before sunset.

Watching the sun dip below the dunes, surrounded by the peace of the desert, was unforgettable. At camp, we stayed in traditional tents with comfortable beds, a clean bathroom, and a delicious lamb and vegetable tagine for dinner. With only a few other guests, we soaked in the magic of the desert under a sky full of stars.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Middle Atlas – Fes

Our last day started early with a walk among the dunes at sunrise. After breakfast, we rode back to Merzouga by camel, where we switched to a 4×4 for the journey to Fes. Our route took us through the Ziz Valley, with its vast palm grove, and the Middle Atlas Mountains. Here, the scenery turned green and alpine, reminiscent of the Pyrenees. We even passed through Ifrane, often called “Moroccan Switzerland” for its European architecture.

Conclusion:

This 3 day desert tour was a remarkable experience, showcasing Morocco’s stunning landscapes, ancient kasbahs, and the unforgettable desert night.
