Windstar Cruises offers a unique blend of luxury and intimacy for travelers seeking a refined small-ship experience. With a fleet of six yachts and sailing ships, the cruise line caters to those who prefer a more personalized approach to ocean voyages.
Windstar’s ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests, providing an uncrowded atmosphere and attentive service. The smaller vessel size allows access to ports and destinations that larger cruise ships cannot reach, offering passengers exclusive experiences in lesser-known locales.
The cruise line is known for its gourmet dining options, spacious suites, and curated shore excursions. Windstar’s signature experiences include an open bridge policy, allowing guests to visit the captain and officers, and a watersports platform for direct ocean access on certain itineraries.
This Windstar Cruises review will give you the lowdown on what to expect during your cruise and what makes this luxurious cruise line so unique.
History and Overview of Windstar Cruises
Windstar Cruises has made a name for itself in the luxury small-ship cruise industry. The company’s journey from its founding to its current status as a premier cruise line is marked by significant milestones and a commitment to unique sailing experiences.
Origins and Expansion
Windstar Cruises was founded in 1984 as Windstar Sail Cruises by the late Karl Andren. The company began operations with a single ship, the Wind Star, which set sail in 1986.
Windstar quickly gained popularity for its intimate sailing experiences and unique itineraries. In 1987, the company added another ship to its fleet: Wind Song, followed by Wind Spirit in 1988.
The company is part of the award-winning Xanterra Travel Collection.
Fleet and Vessels
Windstar’s fleet consists of six small luxury ships, each offering a distinctive sailing experience. The original trio of sailing yachts – Wind Star, Wind Spirit, and Wind Surf – feature computer-controlled sails and a sleek design.
In 2015, Windstar expanded its fleet by acquiring three all-suite yachts from Seabourn Cruise Line. These ships – Star Pride, Star Breeze, and Star Legend – underwent extensive renovations to align with Windstar’s signature style.
The company’s vessels accommodate between 148 and 342 guests, maintaining an intimate atmosphere. Each ship features luxurious amenities, gourmet dining options, and a high crew-to-guest ratio for personalized service.
What Makes Windstar Cruises Different?
Windstar Cruises sets itself apart with intimate, yacht-style vessels and immersive cultural experiences that go far beyond typical cruise offerings. Their signature Destination Discovery Events include extraordinary experiences like dining under the stars amid the ancient ruins of Ephesus, where guests can savor an elegant meal surrounded by 2,000-year-old marble columns and classical architecture.
The cruise line’s commitment to authentic experiences extends to their culinary program. Chefs source fresh, local ingredients from port markets to create regional specialties that reflect each destination’s unique flavors.
One of their most cherished traditions is the Signature Sail Away ceremony, where stirring music accompanies the unfurling of the sails and raising of the flag as the ship departs each port – a romantic moment that captures the adventurous spirit of small-ship cruising.
Windstar Destinations and Itineraries
Windstar Cruises offers a diverse range of destinations and carefully curated itineraries. Their small ships access unique ports and provide immersive experiences in various regions around the world.
Popular Routes
Windstar’s popular routes include Mediterranean cruises, exploring picturesque coastal towns and islands. Guests can visit iconic destinations like Venice, Rome, and the Greek Isles.
Caribbean voyages feature stops at pristine beaches and vibrant island cultures. Alaska cruises showcase stunning glaciers and wildlife. South Pacific itineraries transport travelers to tropical paradises like Bora Bora and Tahiti. Panama Canal crossings combine engineering marvels with Central American exploration.
Windstar also offers voyages to Northern Europe, including the Norwegian Fjords and Baltic capitals. Southeast Asia cruises visit cultural landmarks in Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
Exclusive Ports of Call
Windstar’s small ships can access ports that larger vessels cannot, providing unique experiences. In the Mediterranean, guests might dock at Portofino, Italy, or Monemvasia, Greece. Caribbean itineraries often include less-visited islands like Bequia or Jost Van Dyke.
In Alaska, ships can navigate closer to glaciers and visit smaller communities like Wrangell. South Pacific voyages might include stops at private islands or remote atolls. Costa Rica itineraries often feature calls at Quepos, gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park.
Aegean Sea Odyssey via the Corinth Canal
We chose the Aegean Sea Odyssey cruise, starting in Athens and finishing in Istanbul. This 9 night trip includes an extraordinary journey through the Corinth Canal. One of the world’s narrowest navigable waterways at just 70 feet wide, it was completed in 1893. Travelling through the canal is a fantastic experience.
Another highlight was our candlelit dinner in ancient Ephesus. No other cruise line is able to host a full dinner here, and the atmosphere is simply unforgettable. Chamber musicians played while we enjoyed delicious local fare. A photographer took our portrait as we entered, with the complimentary photos available on board the next day – what a lovely souvenir!
The complete itinerary is: Athens – Corinth Canal – Delphi – At Sea – Santorini – Bodrum – Kusadasi – Mykonos – Myrina (Lemnos) – Istanbul. With just one day at sea, it’s ideal for those who love exploring as much as we do. The port of Myrina is a good place to spot local deer and mountain goats amongst the castle ruins.
We did two Windstar excursions – Itea, Mythology of Delphi and Santorini, Wineries of Santorini & Oia Village. Delphi is well worth a visit, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site in a spectacular setting. Delphi Museum holds treasures such as the intricate bronze Charioteer statue, while the ancient amphitheatre is another must-see.
Santorini needs no introduction, being one of the most famous Greek islands. Having been a couple of times before, we decided to visit the wineries. We were really impressed with the underground Wine Museum of Santorini, as well as Santo Winery with its jaw-dropping views. Afterwards we had some spare time in both Fira and Oia villages for sightseeing and shopping.
Windstar Star Legend Onboard Experience
Windstar Cruises offers an intimate and luxurious atmosphere on its small ships. Guests enjoy personalized service and upscale amenities. The relaxed dress code and absence of formal nights meant that we had plenty of room in our suitcase for souvenirs!
With just 312 guests, Windstar Star Legend can reach ports that are inaccessible to larger ships. This newly renovated all-suite yacht has benefitted from the $250 Million Star Plus Initiative.
The yachts were cut in half and a new section was inserted, adding 2 new dining experiences, 4 new engines for increased fuel efficiency and 2 new tenders. All the bathrooms on board are entirely new.
50 new suites were added per ship, with the bed conveniently located next to the window. Guests who prefer the traditional layout with the bed near the door and the living area near the window won’t be disappointed as some suites have been kept with that format.
Accommodation Quality
Windstar’s suites provide elegant comfort at sea. All rooms feature ocean views, with many offering private balconies. Queen-size beds come standard, along with flat screen TVs and spacious bathrooms.
Suites range from 277 to 575 square feet, offering separate living areas and walk-in closets. Premium linens, L’Occitane bath products, in-room filtered water and fresh fruit baskets enhance the experience.
We particularly liked the waffle weave bathrobe and slippers, and the considerable amount of storage space. There’s a walk-in closet and also plenty of drawers in the bedroom.
The ships’ recent renovations have updated furnishings and decor for a modern, yacht-like feel. Wood finishes and gold accents create a sophisticated ambiance.
Dining Options
With a variety of dining venues and cuisines, the Windstar Star Legend caters to a range of tastes and preferences. Culinary experiences on Windstar ships emphasize fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and made-to-order dishes.
The main dining room, AmphorA, serves gourmet international cuisine in an elegant setting. Reservations are not required, and thanks to the spacious dining room there’s usually a minimal or no wait to be seated.
Specialty restaurants which do require advance booking include Candles Grill and Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso, which serves modern Spanish fare. Candles Grill provides alfresco dining under the stars with a menu of grilled specialties. Cuadro 44 is a stylish venue on Deck 6 featuring a communal table as well as smaller tables. Try the tapas, jamón ibérico and churros with chocolate, you won’t be disappointed!
Stars Bar and Grill on Deck 8 is a great spot to enjoy barbecue food in partnership with world renowned grilling expert Steven Raichlen.
There is also Veranda, an open-air casual dining area that offers buffet-style breakfast and lunch. Finally, The Yacht Club Cafe offers casual breakfast and lunch options.
Windstar’s partnership as the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation brings guest chefs onboard for special culinary events and menu creations. Wine tastings and cooking demonstrations are popular with food enthusiasts. There’s a huge selection of wines on board, and a friendly sommelier who will help guide your choices.
Room service is available 24/7 at no extra charge. Dietary restrictions and preferences are easily accommodated with advance notice.
Entertainment and Activities
Windstar focuses on destination-immersive experiences rather than large-scale productions. Cooking demonstrations, port talks, and local performances provide cultural insights. We took the opportunity of touring the ship’s kitchens with the Head Chef – it was impressive to hear about their cleaning rota and food production!
The ships feature a fitness center and spa facilities, both free of use to guests. Inside the World Spa, you’ll find treatment rooms, relaxation room, a sauna, steam room and heated loungers.
I tried the complimentary Pilates class which was a great way to start the day. You can also book many exercise classes and treatments in the spa or beauty salon.
On Deck 7 there’s a heated pool and hot tub, with another hot tub located on Deck 5. A water sports platform allows for active pursuits. It is mainly used in the Caribbean where the water is particularly warm.
Evening entertainment includes live music in the Compass Rose lounge, quizzes (our team was proud to have scored full marks on the 80s music quiz!) and occasional deck parties under the stars. The Crew Talent Show was great fun, and we think the guests should put on a similar show for the crew ;-).
The intimate atmosphere on board encourages socializing among guests. We chatted with travellers from Canada, Ireland and the United States, many who were repeat customers of Windstar Cruises.
Shore excursions range from culinary tours to active adventures, often utilizing the ships’ small size to access less-visited ports.
Guest Services
Personalized service is a hallmark of the Windstar experience. The high staff-to-guest ratio ensures attentive care throughout the voyage.
Multilingual abilities among crew members facilitate interactions with international guests. The staff’s proficiency in various languages enhances communication and cultural understanding onboard. Officers and crew members display a polished appearance, wearing crisp uniforms and name tags.
A concierge can assist with dining reservations, spa appointments, and shore excursion bookings. The crew often anticipated our needs, offering assistance before being asked. They provide thoughtful touches like remembering your favorite drinks or dietary requirements.
The open bridge policy allows guests to visit the captain and officers.
Laundry services are available to purchase onboard or as part of a pre-paid package. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the ship as part of a package.
The ships offer an extensive selection of books in the Yacht Club, as well as a complimentary digital newsstand. A medical facility with a doctor is on call for emergencies. The boutique stocks men’s and women’s clothing, accessories, jewelry and perfume at duty free prices.
Windstar Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives
Windstar Cruises has implemented several measures to reduce its environmental impact. The company has invested in advanced wastewater treatment systems on all its ships, ensuring that discharged water meets or exceeds international standards.
Energy efficiency is a key focus for Windstar. The cruise line has installed LED lighting throughout its fleet, significantly reducing electricity consumption. Additionally, they have optimized hull designs and propulsion systems to improve fuel efficiency.
Windstar has partnered with local communities in various ports to support conservation efforts. These initiatives include beach clean-ups, coral reef restoration projects, and educational programs for guests about marine ecosystems.
The cruise line has also taken steps to minimize single-use plastics onboard. They have replaced plastic straws with paper alternatives and introduced reusable filtered water bottles for cabins to reduce plastic waste.
Windstar’s commitment to sustainability extends to its food sourcing practices. The company prioritizes locally sourced, sustainable ingredients for its onboard dining options, supporting regional economies and reducing transportation emissions.
To further reduce their carbon footprint, Windstar has implemented a comprehensive recycling program across its fleet. This includes separating and processing various materials such as glass, paper, and metals for proper disposal or recycling at port facilities.
Windstar Value and Pricing
Windstar Cruises offers a premium experience with pricing that reflects the luxury amenities and intimate atmosphere on board. The line’s value proposition centers on personalized service and unique destination-focused itineraries.
Windstar offers competitive value when factoring in the included amenities and intimate atmosphere. The ships’ ability to access smaller ports enables them to offer itineraries not available on larger vessels.
This cruise line appeals to both solo travelers and groups. Couples make up a significant portion of passengers, often celebrating anniversaries or other milestones. The ships offer a romantic setting for pairs.
Solo travelers will also find a welcoming environment, with organized activities and communal dining options. Some itineraries have reduced single supplements to attract individual guests. Small groups of friends often book together, enjoying the intimate ship size for reunions or birthday celebrations.
Larger groups occasionally charter entire vessels for corporate retreats or family gatherings. During our cruise, an incentive travel group rewarded for being their company’s top salespeople were on board. The ships’ size allows for a more personalized group experience compared to mega-ships.
Inclusions and Extras
Windstar’s cruise fares cover accommodations, meals, non-alcoholic beverages, and entertainment. Specialty dining venues are also included. Shore excursions are priced separately.
Alcoholic beverages are not included but can be purchased individually or as part of beverage packages. Wi-Fi packages are also available to purchase.
The All Inclusive Cruise Package costs $89 per person per day and includes Wi-Fi, unlimited beverages and all gratuities. It must be purchased at least 5 days before departure. If you only decide that you’d like this package when already on board, you’ll pay $99 per day.
Windstar frequently offers promotions that add value, such as onboard credits or included airfare. These deals can significantly enhance the overall value of a cruise booking.
Booking Process and Customer Support
Windstar Cruises offers multiple ways to book voyages. Travelers can reserve directly through the company’s website, by phone, or via travel agents. The online booking platform provides a user-friendly interface with detailed itinerary information and cabin options.
Customer support representatives are available seven days a week to assist with bookings and inquiries. They can be reached by phone, email, or live chat during business hours.
Windstar’s website features a comprehensive FAQ section addressing common questions about booking, cancellations, and onboard amenities. This resource helps passengers find quick answers to their queries.
The cruise line occasionally runs promotions and special offers, which can be found on their website or through email newsletters. These deals may include discounted fares, onboard credits, or cabin upgrades.
Windstar Star Cruises Review: Final Thoughts
We particularly liked the intimate atmosphere and personalized service on board Star Legend. Our spacious stateroom was well equipped with comfortable amenities.
The culinary offerings were particularly impressive. We enjoyed the quality and variety of dining options, with particular acclaim for the fresh seafood and local specialties.
Port visits were another plus point, with some lesser known destinations such as Lemnos in Greece. The excursions featured knowledgeable guides and well-organized tours.
All in all, we’d highly recommend Windstar Cruises for a rewarding trip. Together with their small cruise ships such as Windstar Legend, we heard great things about their sailing yachts from fellow guests.
