Most often when people lack follow through with their goals, it’s referred to as “self sabotage”.
If you’ve thought lack of motivation, lack of discipline, lack of consistency, lack of action or lack of follow through with your intentions and goals IS the real problem, I invite you to think again. These are commonly symptoms of something else.
Often, what’s really going on behind all of this is actually “self protection”. Meaning, some part of you within is NOT willing for the intention/goal you have, deems it to be UNSAFE in some way, and is therefore deliberating getting in the way. Conveniently you find yourself running out of time, forgetting, losing energy. Life seems to get in the way.
While there can be various things going on for any unique individual that culminate to create an issue, from 13 years coaching experience I can categorically tell you that self protection is a HUGE cause of so many issues people are challenged with, including being the most common issue with lack of follow through.
Example: While you CONSCIOUSLY want your goal, and say you do, and intend to take action, that conscious thinking mind is only a small part of what is running you. There are in fact 5 layers to your “Whole System” within, and if any of these layers are NOT onboard for your goal, and not activated/aligned, then it causes all sorts of symptoms and issues. Including things like procrastination, avoidance, poor time management, lack of focus, dwindling motivation and more. The last thing we want to do is judge ourselves or berate ourselves, “What’s wrong with me? What can’t I just…” – because when we know what’s really going on we realize… some sweet part of me is trying to help me by KEEPING ME SAFE, by keeping me away from my intention, action and goal. How clever is my system! But now I have a job to do. And that job is to show all parts of myself (all my layers) that what I want and choose to be, do and create IS SAFE.
