Mundota Fort & Palace is a 450-year-old property located in the dusty village of Mundota, the north-west outskirts of Jaipur. It combines modern boutique luxury with Rajput military history. As India’s first “heritage polo resort,” Mundota combines a 14th-century battle fort on a rocky crag (where the guests stay), a 1550 Indo-Saracenic palace at the foot of the hill (the restaurant), and its own polo ground. Guests can have the dual experience of modern boutique luxury and a playground for lots of cool stuff to do.

Originally built from the Naruka Rajput lineage in the early 1300s, the fort was later seized by the Nathawat clan of Kachwaha royalty in Jaipur. This followed a battle siege, and they continue to occupy it today. The palace, now intact and in working condition, was built in 1550 by Thakur Jaswant Singh, a descendant of Raja Prithviraj Singh of Amer. The Indo-Saracenic architectural masterpiece has frescoed corridors, jharokha balconies, and mirror-inlaid suites.

The process of restoring the estate took seven years and revealed covered courtyards and rebuilt crumbling ramparts. As a nod to the palace’s past as the western lookout of Jaipur, visitors can still trace musket slits along walls of forts. The stairs up the turret offer a full 360-degree view of the Aravalli hills.

Mundota Palace includes a total of 125 keys, including 10 War-Fort Suites at the top of the range with private plunge pool, panorama terrace, and jacuzzi. Every suite includes its own butler service, even the most entry-level Palace Superior Room includes a hand-painted ceiling and carved stone arches. Palace amenities include two infinity pools, a full-service spa in the historic Zenana quarters from ancient times, free wifi, and a fitness center.

Mundota Fort and Palace has a number of restaurants, including Baradari, who specialize in farm-to-table Rajasthani cuisine on a patio under colonnaded arches. There are also several modern business amenities such as conference suites, a children’s playground, and horse stables. The venue is as suitable to corporate retreats as it is to royal weddings.

EXPERIENCES BEYOND THE SUITE

Mundota’s purposely designated array of experiences is what makes it distinctive. Visitors can enjoy riding thorough bred Marwari horses for a game of polo, or camelback riding on the estate’s private paddock, which was formerly only accessible to Jaipur royalty. Moreover, they have turret-top candlelit dinners, historical walks in the local townships, and dusk vehicle safari journeys to the hill-fort.

For the adventurous, they can have a “step-well dining” in a thousand diyas, trek into the scrub of Aravalli, or spot peacocks on the lawns of the fort. For seekers of wellness, they can relax with Ayurvedic massages in the domed spa. They can also practice yoga just after dawn on the fort battlements, where the only sound is the sound of deep ringing of temple bells that fill the valley.

Mundota is roughly forty minutes from the centre of Jaipur. The hotel offers chauffeur-driven shuttles from Jaipur International Airport, approximately 40 kilometres from Mundota. You must check-out by 11:00, and check-in is from 15:00. Average rooms currently start at around INR 20,000, depending on the time of year, on various online resources.

The high season is October to March and outdoor spaces are prettiest then and daytime temperatures are around 25 °C. If you want a War-Fort Suite or will be hosting events, make advanced bookings at least three months ahead as they will be booked quickly during the wedding season in winter.
